Guarded House Collection

There exists a well established group of Scottish samplers featuring a building with a guard in the doorway. We are fortunate to have several of these to share with our members.

The guard is portrayed with a variety of features - traditional garb, staff, hat, shoes. Some have faces, some do not. The building is likewise similar but not exactly the same - some have peaked roofs, some do not. It is important to say that the building and guard depicted on Grizel Henderson is the most traditional rendition in terms of both pattern and colour. Many of the group also have a pair of medallions depicting the thistle and rose of Scotland and England.

We have openly defined the term "guard" to include two pieces featuring guard dogs!
